Το Arena Rock

Με επιρροή την παρουσία καλλιτεχνών όπως οι Aerosmith, ο Alice Cooper, οι Sweet και οι New York Dolls, εμφανίστηκαν οι πρώτες γκλαμ μέταλ μπάντες, μερικές εκ των οποίων ήταν οι Mφtley Crόe, οι W.A.S.P. και οι Ratt.
Το 1987, οι Guns N' Roses, έκαναν το ντεμπούτο τους με τίτλο Appetite for Destruction.
Το οργανικό ροκ (Instrumental rock) έγινε επίσης δημοφιλές εκείνη την περίοδο με την κυκλοφορία του Surfing with the Alien από τον Joe Satriani.

Όμοια το τραγούδι των Aerosmith με τίτλο Walk This Way έφτασε στο νούμερο 10 του Billboard Hot 100 το 1977.

Keith Richards

With trademark honesty and charm, a Rolling Stone traces his transformation from Boy Scout to rock'n'roll legend.
The sins that have been committed in the name of Keith Richards are innumerable. All performed with heavy-lidded deference to "that" guy. The cliche. Skin poppin', line snortin', plank slingin' Keef, the "human riff". All tousle 'n' sinew, bones 'n' brass.
There have been accounts written – hugely fun most of them – that inject into the legend like a piping bag. Up and Down with the Rolling Stones by Tony Sanchez, Keith's aide de camp through the dope and fug years of the early '70s being exquisitely succinct in recounting the procedures: drugs – loads of 'em – and lawlessness, all in exotic locations, but rarely recounting the music.
For many of my 41 years, as a recidivist, I'm left figuring: when did Keith Richards, Boy Scout, doting son of Doris, pet-loving scamp, become Keef, the cadaverous prince of all that is louche?
He explains himself thus: "I can't untie the threads of how much I played up to the part that was written for me. I mean the skull ring and the broken tooth and the kohl. Is it half and half? . . . There is something inside me that just wants to excite that thing in other people, because I know it's there in everybody. There's a demon in me, and there's a demon in everybody else." Touche.
However, the sweeter reverberations of this book are cast by Keith. The remunerations of childhood in postwar Dartford, schoolyard politics, then the epiphanic discovery of, first, rock 'n' roll (Heartbreak Hotel, radio under the bedcovers), then the molecular restructuring caused by hearing the blues are all delivered with a style so avuncular they effervesce long after those of pharmaceutical cocaine and the south of France. Hugely titillating as they are. I'm possibly just jealous.
The characters most adoringly portrayed and recollected are stoic, forbearing types. All, it would seem, in the shadow of his adored grandfather, Gus, a man of few words, all delivered right on time. "Gus and his family were a rare thing for those days – they were about as bohemian as you could get . . . encouraged a kind of irreverence and nonconformity." And here, for me, is the rub: for the sins committed by Keef were originally accompanied with style and, for all the appropriation by lesser likely lads, a personal history.
He's a war baby never an arm's reach from military references, whether paying dues to his future father-in-law or the defence of his personal arsenal. There are stoned, violent arguments about the "proper" constitution of custard after an English roast.
He is at no pains to distinguish his administrations, but in the same way that his amorous dalli-ances are all aromatically hung with Byronic chivalry, so the salacious tales (that many will thumb to) are presented as a necessary excursion for one ineffably "touched" by blues and bohemia.
The duality of the man is familiar to those of us who have pored over the biographies of the true English royalty. Be it Roger Daltrey's trout farms or Sir Mick's internal class struggles, there will always be an Albion to daydream of even when hurtling along the great American "lost highway". To wit, we get Keef's meticulous equations for the mixing of lactose to heroin and a hundred pages later his recipe for bangers'n'mash. And an uncomfortably poignant photograph of Papa Keef constructing a train set on a hotel bed, with his son Marlon – who becomes, stoic, forbearing – watching on in the twisted pose of an eight-year-old aware that his father is up on trafficking charges.
While the aforementioned recipes are like notes left on the table, pinned down with a dagger and a wink, it's when the talk turns to music that his oceanic lilt and pirate's burr get conspiratorial with your ear and heart.
Talking of blues giant Jimmy Reed's "lazy 5" chord, the Buddha-like presence of Muddy Waters, a phone call from maestro Hoagy Carmichael, his tempestuous relationship with Chuck Berry . . . this is the treasure hidden under the familiar loose dirt. Men who have strode the walk and wailed the talk are regarded with such passionate reverence and regard that the evolution of a Dart-ford Boy Scout is now traceable.
He hid in blues, grew with rock'n'roll and lived accelerated by its sorcery and seduction. Furthermore, for all the grievances with perennial sparring partner Mick, the rhythm of the book swings hardest when it's loquaciously riffing on the Jagger/Richards writing relationship. The record that should accompany the book would swing like a mattock.
The myth of Keef has got to such a point that, when walking through a restaurant, my dear late friend and mentor, Goose, desperately ill with cancer, was met with a howl of retribution from a patron, "Hey yer not Keth Richards ya know," alluding, I guess, to his pallid, hollowed visage. I'm guessing many will collate only the stories that will fit that image from this autobiography.
The sins I've committed in the name of Keef are many. Sartorial and social for the most part. If I'd read this hugely loving, charming, singular book before all the others, I'd have performed them all with considerable more tact. And style.
And if it sounds as if I'm appraising a life, rather than a book, well perhaps that says something about the book.
Tim Rogers is the frontman of You Am I. The band's eponymously titled new album is on the Other Tongues label.
